What does it mean to be "backed up"?

This means that you have a second copy of all of your files safely stored on a device that is not your computer, in case of equipment failure or loss.  If you have moved some of your files onto an external device and have deleted them from the computer, you have NOT backed up those files, you've simply moved them.  That external device has the same potential for failure or loss that your computer does, which means that the files aren't yet safe.

How could I lose my data?

Common situations that cause data loss include:  Accidental file deletion, hard drive failure and computer theft.  Look at your computer and imagine what you would do if it suddenly disappeared.  A new computer can be purchased, but your documents, emails, pictures, music and movies are priceless and no retailer on earth can replace what would be lost if you don't have a backup.

What do I need to start backing up my files?

You can purchase a backup drive at any computer-related retailer, or you can take advantage of any of the specials listed above.  Be sure to contact EnlightenMac if you're not sure how large your backup drive should be.

Why do I need to do maintenance?  I thought Macs just worked?

One of the best things about Apple's products is their ease of use and resistance to digital wear and tear.  Over time though, regular use will take its toll - whether as a result of downloaded applications that aren't always perfect and may leave a mess in the background after installation, or even something as innocuous as a power surge or outtage that causes something to crash.  The result of this is that things slow down, crash, hang up, or just plain act weird.

What about viruses?

The good news about viruses is that there aren't nearly as many out there that are made for Macs as there are for PCs.  One reason for this is that the person who is writing the virus software wants to be able to infect as many computers as they possibly can.  Since a much greater percentage of computers run Windows, it is logical to attack them instead.  However, that doesn't mean that Macs are completely immune.  People can still send you infected files either via a website or email, that you can still open and introduce invasive software into your system.  If you believe that you might have happened in your system, we can definitely explore that possibility and implement a fix during a Fixer-Upper visit.
